A Stitch In Time

the threads of VF's history

Part 1: Silk

We’re not just willing to change; we thrive on it. Unravel the spool to see how we got to where we are today. Our past is a part of the fabric of VF, and we should never forget where we came from.

John Barbey and a group of investors establish the Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company in Pennsylvania.

The company expands into silk lingerie and is renamed “Schuylkill Silk Manufacturing.” When a lingerie line gets the name “Vanity Fair” in a contest, they become “Vanity Fair Silk Mills, Inc.”

“Vanity Fair Silk Mills, Inc.” drops the word “silk” due to an embargo on the material during World War II

We’re still writing our history with associates around the world. We can’t wait to fill in the next decade and beyond together.

Until then, unwind more of our story in Issue 2.
