Something I’ve really missed through COVID is impromptu hallway conversations. Where you get little glimpses into life outside of work, where employees are transformed into people, people with lives and kids, ballgames and pets. Those little moments are fundamental to us achieving our goals and moving forward.
That being said, I couldn’t be prouder of how the team at Altra has pivoted. If you’re talking about firm footholds, being prepared and in a strong place to push forward, there was just nobody who was prepared for COVID. The footholds we had were suddenly… gone.
But we immediately focused on being human. Without the stability of life as we knew it, the only firm foothold we had was each other. Staying in contact was key and our check-ins weren’t business-oriented; they were people-focused. Responding with a human focus, helped us stay not only productive and successful – but supportive, caring, and understanding.
Maintaining a great understanding of what our own people need will help us maintain our focus on what our consumers need, so we can keep them on the trail, keep supporting them as they take care of their physical and mental health. And with more folks motivated to get off the couch and get outdoors, there will be real opportunities for VF.
As we start to come out of COVID we should consider our people as our firmest foothold. When everything fell apart, our people kept us going. We need to consider comfort levels, how we get people together, how we continue to build cultures and brands on a human level. When we first take care of ourselves, coming together with a human focus, only then can we do our best work. After all, the rising tide raises all boats, right?
